That’s ok, I probably don’t know you either. It doesn’t mean that I don’t know what I’m doing. In fact it might just mean that I’m a lousy salesperson who has difficulty in promoting my own business (not entirely untrue).
Web designers and freelancers come in all shapes and sizes, from individual contractors to “boutique” and full-fledged agencies, all of which have varying degrees of experience and none of which should be dismissed as unskilled just because they’re unknown to you.
What’s In A Name
It comes down to how much stock you put into a name. If a lot, I guess you’re looking at doing some research (social media stalking, Googling for reviews, etc.) Otherwise, an old-fashioned phone/zoom conversation with the new guy should provide you with enough ammunition to decide how much they know and how comfortable you are in taking a chance on them. There’s no getting around that.
Turning The Tables
And not for nothin’ but, consider looking at this arrangement from the eyes of the web designer: 99% of our clients are unknown to us but we still take a chance on them because well, if we didn’t, we’d never work. (And I can tell you from personal experience that we have our fair share of regret!)
“Never heard of you” is a 2-way street. If you navigate it with a little common sense, you could easily find yourself talking to someone whose anonymity is minimized by their expertise.
